Challenge

T.G. Mercer Consulting Services, Inc., located in Aledo, Texas, provides pipe unloading, handling and logistics for the oil and gas pipeline construction industry.

Need

Tasked with storing and transporting over 600 miles of pipe for the Rover Pipeline, T.G. Mercer needed an expert in rigging and moving to get the job done. CEI Crane & Rigging, Inc. (CEI) provided crane services to lift and transport the pipe to job sites throughout Ohio.

Result

Rigging and crane service for pipe pulls. On-site project coordination.
“For our headquarters to be in Texas and for our projects to be nationwide, sometimes it’s hard to facilitate getting the right people there and making sure that our foremen are in tune with the new people on site,” Magee said. “Specifically, in Marion [Ohio], we’ve had numerous reports of how great [CEI’s] operators are. We’ve had multiple contractors report to us how safe and efficient they are.”

As oil and gas activity expanded across the Midwest, energy companies needed dependable partners to keep large scale projects on schedule. T.G. Mercer, a Texas based pipeline transportation consultant, was tasked by Energy Transfer with developing the storage and staging site for the Rover Pipeline, a 713 mile natural gas pipeline spanning West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. Located in Massillon, Ohio, the site became one of the largest yards T.G. Mercer had ever built, housing more than 600 miles of large diameter steel pipe. Preparing and operating a yard of that scale required experienced rigging support to move joint pipe from the yard to right of way locations across Ohio, which is where CEI Crane and Rigging stepped in.

Throughout the project, CEI provided more than ten cranes along with certified crane operators and riggers to support ongoing transportation and lifting needs. According to T.G. Mercer project controller Erica Magee, CEI consistently delivered when heavy lifts exceeded the capabilities of existing equipment, often responding quickly to last minute requests. As the Rover Pipeline project operated under a strict timeline with significant financial penalties for delays, CEI’s responsiveness and ability to adapt equipment and resources played a critical role in keeping work moving forward.

Magee also highlighted CEI’s on the ground coordination and safety record, particularly as T.G. Mercer managed projects nationwide from its Texas headquarters. Reports from multiple contractors praised CEI’s operators for being safe, efficient, and easy to work with, helping ensure smooth collaboration across teams. This local presence and operational reliability made CEI a trusted partner on one of the largest and most time sensitive pipeline projects in the region.
